Give Thanks: Not Complaints

Happy Thanksgiving! Today we all need to reflect and be thankful and grateful for our lives, families and friends. I received the email below and it made me stop and think about my profession as a wedding planner.  My goal is to plan a flawless, unique and memorable event for my clients and an experience for their guests.  However, many times we all get caught up in the details such as; What shade grey is the linen? The flowers were an inch too tall!  Where are the pictures of my step mother’s first cousin’s husband??  My bouquet was too small!! and the list could go on for days.  It is important to remember WHY there is an event- it is because 2 people have fallen in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together.  Just think of all the people that are alone without someone to love or someone to love them back, think of the people that can’t afford to have the wedding of their dreams or live every day wondering if their fiance will make it back from the war to even have a wedding.  In the grand scheme of things the flowers, food, pictures, decor should take the back seat and everyone should reflect on the things they are thankful for such as life, family and friends. Below is an email I received that everyone should read…

Her name is Katie Kirkpatrick, 21 yrs old.

Next to her is her fiance, Nick, 23.

This picture was taken prior to their wedding January 11th, 2005.

Katie has terminal cancer and spends hours in chemotherapy.

Here Nick awaits while she finishes one of the sessions…

Even in pain and dealing with her organs shutting down,

with the help of morphine,

Katie took care of every single part of the wedding planning.

Her dress had to be adjusted several times

due to Katie’s constant weight loss.

An expected guest was her oxygen tank.

Katie had to use it during the ceremony and reception.

The other couple in this picture is Nick’s parents,

very emotional with the wedding and of course

to see their son marrying the girl he fell in love

when he was an adolescent.

Katie, in a wheel chair

listening to her husband and friends singing to her.

In the middle of the party,

Katie had to rest for a bit and catch her breath.

The pain does not allow her to stand for long period of time.

image0015
Katie died 5 days after her wedding.

To see a fragile woman dress as bride with a beautiful smile makes you think…  happiness is always there within reach, no matter how long it lasts…

lets enjoy life and don’t live a complicated life.

Life is too short.

Work as if it was your first day.
Forgive as soon as possible.
Love without boundaries.
Laugh without control
and never stop smiling.

Mag Love: Southern Weddings

Southern Weddings cover

First of all, apologies for I.V.Y. being M.I.A. on the blog. As I am sure you can guess, fall is a busy time for weddings and as much as Ivy and the IRW&E loves blogging and twittering, our brides and grooms come first!

Even though Ivy’s been dashing all over the place putting finishing touches on an upcoming Maui wedding and just returned from a FAM trip (more details to come!) in Costa Rica, she wanted to give a huge THANKS to Southern Weddings Magazine for letting her be a part of their cover story ” 60 Ways to Have a Southern Wedding” !

Down here where the weather is warm and the tea is sweet, weddings take on a whole new level of excitement, which is one of the reasons why Ivy Robinson Weddings & Events made it’s home in North Carolina!

We are so excited that Southern Weddings has gotten its first, beautiful issue out on the shelves. Be sure to pick yourself up a copy (or three) and check out the expert tips (including Ivy’s) on how to throw yourself one fabulous Southern wedding!
